In 2011, Xbox debuted a new game series called "Alan Wake", a psychological thriller where the hero uses a flashlight to unveil terrifying clues to solve a murder. Much of the game took place in the dark, so how you used your flashlight determined how much you learn - and how closer you get to the killer.

To prepare our audience for this different game play experience, we created a mobile app that worked like a flashlight when paired with our Alan Wake microsite, which was completely dark. As you hovered the flashlight around the screen, the dark sifted away to reveal different types of content.
