For Data Privacy Day, Blackphone and Silent Circle wanted to shed light on this reality: the most popular apps on your smartphone ask for permissions that expose your data to outside sources. To prove this point, we asked people on the street to read some of these permissions out loud so we could capture their reactions. The video led them to our landing page on, where we presented stats, white papers, tips and links to purchase Blackphone and Silent Circle products. It also led them to their Privacy Project page, which is a public conversation about all the big and small steps we can take to protect ourselves.

It served as a great starting point towards establishing Blackphone and Silent Circle as thought leaders. On Data Privacy Day, media outlets like Fast Company, Gizmodo, TechCrunch and The Daily Mail lauded Blackphone and Silent Circle for highlighting the issues and, most importantly, the small steps people can take to protect themselves. That week, visits to Blackphone's site went up 150%, while The Privacy Project had a 500% increase.
